Experienced fighters know that the key to finding the right jiu jitsu gear lies in the comfort and protection offered by high quality equipment. While some may be immediately attracted to gear that looks good, you really need to be aware of the specific nuances involved with each piece. This includes factors like how well the equipment fits, the freedom of movement offered, and lastly, whether or not it matches the look you're going for.

The standard gi is one of the most easily recognizable pieces of gear in all of the sport. Sometimes called a kimono, a proper gi includes a top and bottom that is worn in both practice and competitive bouts. Gis are available in a plethora of different colors and designs, and a number of reputable industry brands manufacture them, so you'll have plenty to choose from when shopping for a new gi.

Gi tops resemble loose-fitting leisure jackets. Void of any buttons or fasteners, the top depends solely on the fighter's belt to keep it closed and secure. Tops are often adorned with brandings from the fighter's gym, team, and sponsors.

If the top of the gi is akin to a leisure jacket, the pants can be likened to modern day lounge pants. Designed with a loose fit down the entire length of each leg, the pants are tied at the waist with a drawstring and further secured with the fighter's belt. As with the top, patches and labels on the pants display the fighter's partnerships and professional relationships.

Any kind of underwear will technically work for underneath your gi. Athletic shorts that have moisture wicking qualities and integrated ventilation are ideal. Of course, you'll also want to make sure it offers protection where it matters most.

Last but not least comes the underwear. There isn't any typical design that is meant strictly for use in this sport, but there are some qualities you should look for. Underwear with an integrated jock strap provide necessary protection, and moisture wicking material will draw sweat and moisture away from your crotch.

With so much jiu jitsu gear available today, finding the perfect equipment that matches your individual style can be quite challenging. Knowing what works right for you is paramount to succeeding in the sport, however, so it's important to familiarize with the different equipment on the market. Once you know the qualities and attributes of each piece, then you can worry about finding something that looks good.
