The German Shepherd is a large and strong animal which was created in Germany. It was initially developed as a dog for driving the livestock.

However, its characteristic traits of strength and loyalty were noticed by the law enforcement agencies. It was soon initiated into the police force to provide personal protection to patrolling officers. They proved to be very helpful, particularly at night time, and made good companions for the police officers.

Their unwarranted pluck was also identified by law enforcers which then brought these dogs to the police forces of countries other than Germany such as France, Austria and Hungary. Governments spent a lot on the training and breeding of these types because of their utility.

When trained, German Shepherds are capable of protecting certain individuals. Apart from this, they are also obedient and get on with humans well. With proper training, they are also used as attack dogs and with some technique such as the bark and hold, they instill fear on people and are used to regain public order. But contrary to this, German Shepherds are really mild tempered dogs and are unaggressive.

But, when they become aware of a threat they will become very protective of their companion. This quality has been audaciously built amongst the pure bloodlines and has been kept specifically for guard dogs and police dogs.

Cop dogs, rather than being sworn to duty as law enforcers, receive their own badges. Given that they are killed while doing their job, these cop dogs are also given an honorable funeral. They are also protected and well taken care of. Those in tough operations are given proper suits such as Kevlar vests while old or sick ones are made to stop working. It is also considered a crime to kill or even harm police dogs.

The German army was known for its ruthless use of the German shepherd and the American soldiers were very enamored by its performance. Basically its prestige was cemented during its performance in the World Wars. The American soldiers who returned home had a lot of stories to relate about the attack dogs used by the German army. This added to the fame and awareness about German shepherds who were eventually utilized as attack dogs and for personal security. The most famous dog which was initially imported from Germany after the World War I was Rin Tin Tin.

Since German Shepherds has a very strong sense of smell, they were utilized during the war to find out army men who were missing. A lot of search and rescue operations became successful with the help of these canines. They were also perfect base camp guards during that time.

This dog, having a keen sense of smell and hearing, would alert the patrolling officers well in advance of any approaching threat. In order to safeguard them from the attackers some guard dogs have even been given bulletproof vests.
